Five questions with Ashley Dodson, CPA

not-for-profit accountant ashley dodson cpa

Get to know Ashley Dodson, CPA, whose favorite thing about being a CPA is the nonprofit organizations she gets to work with.

1. What is your role?

I am the owner of Ashley Dodson, CPA, and I specialize in helping nonprofit and governmental clients. Throughout my years in public accounting I have been able to work with some of the most amazing clients and organizations. I’ve been able to help them implement new accounting standards, update internal control processes, advise them on significant transactions, and provide training on numerous topics. Being a CPA has allowed me to meet some of the most amazing people, take on fun challenges, and take a few steps “outside the box” for different opportunities. I’ve had the privilege of being an adjunct instructor at Westminster College and a member of the Young Professionals Committee of the Missouri Society of CPA’s. Each of these opportunities has strengthened my love of the accounting profession, and made me excited for what the future holds!

2. What has been your favorite vacation?

So far my favorite vacation has been my honeymoon to Disney World! I squealed like a five-year-old every time a princess walked by, and the food was absolutely amazing! I also wore my Minnie Mouse ears every day, and we received special “newlywed” buttons that my husband and I wore. We constantly received “Congratulations!” from the cast members. It was truly the most magical place on Earth.

3. What is the best piece of life advice you ever received?

My dad has always told me “You can do anything short-term.” We all deal with struggles in our lives, whether personally or professionally; but those struggles when viewed from 30,000 feet are only short-term obstacles that we face in order to really reach our end goal. I use that quote in similar fashion as “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.”

4. Why did you choose to start your own practice?

I chose to start my own practice so that I could work with my favorite niche clients, and take advantage of the lifestyle that being a small-firm owner affords. I enjoy working with nonprofit organizations because the people are always positive, kind, and truly believe in making the world a better place and helping people. Nonprofit’s are full of passion and energy, which make them an absolute blast to work with. Owning my own practice has been in the back of my mind since college, and now seemed like the perfect time to make the leap!

5. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and what would you do?

If I could travel anywhere in the world, it would be to Rome, Italy. I’ve always been fascinated by ancient Roman culture, and I studied the Latin language in college. I even named my dog Brutus, just so I could use the phrase “Et tu, Brute?”
